"Breaking the Silence: Queer Self, Life, and Love in Northeast Ohio" is a writing project of Literary Cleveland, led by Alexander Saint Franqui. After a tragic year for our community, Breaking the Silence seeks to uplift narratives that center on the queer experience in the Greater Cleveland area, especially those written by Black/Indigenous/People of Color. The project accepted poetry, prose, essays, creative non-fiction, and flash fiction written by queer/LGBTQ2 identified people.5 Articles


BJ Colangelo is a recovering child beauty queen that fancies herself the lovechild of Christopher Sarandon in “Fright Night” and Susan Sarandon in “The Hunger”. BJ is a social emotional theatre teaching artist and a professional horror film journalist and theorist. She writes about horror, wrestling, sex, kicking pancreatic cancer’s ass, and being a fat queer all over the Internet. Her work has been featured in publications like Blumhouse, Medium, Playboy, Vulture, Birth. Movies. Death., Autostraddle, and The Daily Dot, and has contributed essays to the books When Animals Attack!, Creepy Bitches, and Hidden Horror 101.5 Articles


Caitlin Fisher is a queer, non-binary writer in Cleveland, author of The Gaslighting of the Millennial Generation, and prone to random acts of pep talk. She is also the host of the podcast Run Like Hell Toward Happy, a show that helps overwhelmed creatives achieve their goals without burnout.4 Articles


Originally from Toledo, Jen Kuhn now resides in Columbus where she is a creative nonprofit professional moonlighting as a writer and occasional DJ.4 Articles


Barbara Marie Minney is a transgender woman, poet, writer, speaker, and quiet activist. She is a retired attorney and originally from West Virginia. Now based in Tallmadge, Ohio, her first collection of poetry entitled “If There’s No Heaven” was the winner of the 2020 Poetry Is Life Book Award and the Akron Beacon Journal Best Northeast Ohio Books 2020.3 Articles


Dan Eggers (he/they) is a queer, trans, performer and activist who is studying Music Theatre at Baldwin Wallace University. He is also a Trans Youth Ambassador for the Alabama chapter of the Human Rights Campaign. If he isn’t in class or rehearsing, you can find him climbing trees or doing splits.3 Articles

Eliana Turan is Director of Development at The LGBT Community Center of Greater Cleveland and is a Ph.D. student at Walden University. She served in the U.S. Army from 2000 to 2006 and survived three deployments.3 Articles


Maria McGinnis is a recent graduate of Kent State University where she studied journalism and minored in advertising and psychology. She is now working as a freelance writer and editor. In her free time when she's not typing away on her laptop, Maria enjoys spending time with her friends and family, baking, yoga, discovering new music and thrift shopping.2 Articles
