Ohio became national news last week with Governor Mike DeWine’s signing of a budget that included “Medical Practitioner Conscience” clause, which allows healthcare providers to refuse care if they feel that care conflicts with their “moral, ethical, or religious beliefs.”
From national organizations to LGBTQ+ publications to private citizens, reactions have been swift and condemning of this “right to discriminate.” We’ve collected here 11 tweets that caught our attention.
On the last day of #PrideMonth, Governor DeWine enshrined anti-LGBTQ discrimination into law, threatening the medical well being of more than 380,000 LGBTQ people in Ohio. @HRC will do everything in our power to fight this deeply dangerous provision.https://t.co/32OUpwOKyh

I know yesterday was a huge news day but I really need y’all to understand that Ohio made it legal for doctors to deny services on religious grounds effectively legalizing LGBTQ+ healthcare discrimination.
This is horrific. #Pride month may be over, but the fight cannot stop. https://t.co/MdHgFZhzkG

Last night, Ohio Gov. DeWine signed the Republican state budget that included a provision allowing healthcare professionals to refuse services based on their personal religious or ethical beliefs.
This is a license to discriminate against LGBTQ Ohioans.
For shame. pic.twitter.com/3FvTBxwoW2

Also @GovMikeDeWine & @ohiogop: it’s ok to deny healthcare to LGBTQ+ people as long as you say it’s bc “religion.”

my heart breaks for the people in the lgbtq+ community in Ohio right now. medical practitioners already exhibited so much ableism, racism, transphobia, and misogyny and this just made it so much worse. https://t.co/IFWx22cXya

You’re going to let someone die and refuse to treat them based simply on sexual orientation? That’s monstrous. Then how about a provision to ban services to Republicans on the same grounds?

Next time you are driving in Ohio, you get into a car accident, EMS: are you LGBTQ You: yes. EMS: sorry, can’t help you, I been told I have moral religious objection. But I can call the medical examiner, oh no he can’t help either. https://t.co/Cjm4tee6No

On the last day of Pride at the 11th hour, OH Gov signed this law. It’s going to be challenged. Ohio will lose. And it will cost tax payers. Culture wars are not winnable. https://t.co/i868DmJMWl
