The Buckeye Flame invites applications for new Board members

The Board currently has openings for four (4) at-large members. The deadline for Board applications is May 10.

The Buckeye Flame – Ohio’s statewide LGBTQ+ newsroom – continues to experience rapid and inspiring growth.

We invite applications for new Board members to support current operations and to help shape the future of the organization.

Members of the Board serve a 3-year term and commit to 4-5 hours a month (which includes a 90-minute monthly meeting) in support of the mission and development of The Buckeye Flame in the committees and areas of: fundraising/development, operations and community outreach.

The Board currently has openings for four (4) at-large members.

The Buckeye Flame strives to have a representative board that is demographically and geographically diverse; BIPOC Ohioans, trans Ohioans and individuals outside of Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati are especially encouraged to apply.

The deadline for applications is May 10 and interested applicants can fill out the Board interest form located here.

History on fire

The Buckeye Flame launched in June of 2020 as a 501c3 nonprofit newsroom, filling Ohio’s lack of a statewide LGBTQ+ newsroom. In a state where LGBTQ+ Ohioans do not have any protections in the areas of housing, employment, and public accommodations and where the Ohio legislature is working overtime to restrict the lived experience of LGBTQ+ Ohioans, the need for an LGBTQ+ newsroom continues to be critical.

Our mission: to amplify the voices of LGBTQ+ Ohioans to support community and civic empowerment through the creation of engaging content that chronicles our triumphs, struggles and lived experiences.

Since our 2020 launch, The Buckeye Flame has become the go-to source for original LGBTQ+ Ohio stories covering everything from politics to policy to community celebrations.

Right on our homepage – and from our first day in existence – we openly encourage other media outlets to “Steal Our Stories” at no cost. We believe so deeply in the education, depth and sensitivity of our content that we do everything we can to make our stories as widely accessible as possible and never behind a paywall.

Our work has been honored by myriad organizations including The New York Times, GLAAD, the Society of Professional Journalists and The Association of LGBTQ+ Journalists. 🔥
