LGBTQ+ Ohio teen publishes poetry collection exploring heartbreak, loss, nostalgia and self-hate

John Colacarro’s work aims to comfort individuals discovering their LGBTQ+ identities.

While exploring and embracing his LGBTQ+ identity in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, John Colacarro wrote a powerful volume of poetry titled “mountains.”

The collection features poems that touch on coming out as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, the experience of finding an individual of the same sex attractive for the first time and many other thrills and harsh realities that often come with being queer in today’s world.

Symbolizing the sometimes tumultuous journey of life and the process of moving through highs and lows, “mountains” explores themes of heartbreak, loss, nostalgia and self-hate.

Colacarro believes poetry should be freeing, not rigid or limited to specific parameters or patterns. It has given him the ability to express himself in a new and deeply personal way.

It took a few years to write, refine and publish the work, but it was a process that Colacarro enjoyed. He has found self-publishing the collection rewarding in terms of building meaningful, personable one-on-one connections with fellow professionals and community members through poetry readings, book signings and media interactions.

Colacarro, who grew up in Wickliffe, an eastern Cleveland suburb, was surrounded by a comforting community as he explored his LGBTQ+ identity and eventually came out as queer. Growing up with two mothers, Colacarro was raised in a family that celebrates and amplifies LGBTQ+ pride.

That being said, Colacarro recognizes that families are not always accepting, peers are not always kind and the world can be a challenging place.

To this harsh reality, he says, “I hope people find a sense of safety in my work, and I hope people find a sense of comfort. I want people to feel seen.”

Colacarro encourages young adults exploring their LGBTQ+ identity to “take all the time you need.”

Now 18, Colacarro plans to begin college at The Ohio State University this fall while continuing to pursue his passion for poetry.

As a final remark, Colacarro emphasizes, “Queerness is a beautiful thing. Queerness has saved a lot of people’s lives, and people being authentically true to themselves has saved lives. Don’t feel ashamed, and take your time. Be you on your terms.” 🔥
