On Friday, the Cleveland Cavaliers debuted a one-minute video affirming Northeast Ohio’s LGBTQ+ community.
Premiering on the jumbo screens at Pride Night, “For the Love. For the Land. For Pride.” features a host LGBTQ+ individuals set against the backdrop of an narrative exploration of “pride.”
Though few major professional sports franchises have made such a public display of their LGBTQ+ support, this is far from the Cavaliers’ first display of commitment. Earlier this year, two restrooms at Cleveland’s Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse were permanently converted into all-gender facilities. Additionally, the organization features an active LGBTQ+ employee resource group that regularly participates in Pride festivities, and Cavs forward Larry Nance Jr. tweeted his support for the Ohio Fairness Act, which would grant the LGBTQ+ community protections in housing, employment and public accommodations:
In Ohio we have discriminatory laws to protect nearly every class of persons including.. race, color, ancestry, age, religion, disability, and military status.. it is BEYOND time to add sexual orientation and gender identity to this list…
