As they fight against anti-transgender legislation at every level of government, board members at TransOhio — the state’s only trans-led advocacy organization — decided to return to their roots as a print newsletter.
The group is now taking submissions for a new zine focused squarely on trans joy, created entirely by and for transgender Ohioans.
Titled, Trans Joy Zine 2023, board secretary Dara Atkinson called the publication a “statewide trans joy project,” and said every submission will be published (likely in both print and digital forms), so long as it meets set criteria.
The deadline for submissions is May 20, 2023.
In order for submissions to meet eligibility, the creator must be transgender, non-binary or gender non-conforming and a current Ohio resident.
Contributors will each receive a free copy of the zine’s print edition, with additional proceeds from print sales of the zine benefitting TransOhio’s gender and name change mutual aid grants.
Submissions must also feature “some aspect of [how] being trans has given you joy or fulfillment.”
“Submissions of joy can come in any form of expression that speaks to you that can be reproduced in print media,” Atkinson said in TransOhio’s call for submissions. “Some examples of content types: short stories, essays, poems, art, statements, pictures, comics, jokes, shared moments, doodles, photos, and everything else in-between.”
“No submission is too small in length or degree: all joy is valid,” they added. “Our trans joy is resistance and power and we’re very excited to showcase that.” 🔥
