“How can I find a camp that’s truly safe and affirming for my child?”
A parent of a transgender preteen recently asked me this, recounting their child’s heartbreaking experience at a camp that claimed to be “inclusive.” Their child simply wanted a summer where they could exist authentically—without having to defend or explain their identity.
Sadly, this parent’s story wasn’t unique. Time and again, I’ve heard similar experiences from families who sought an inclusive space but ended up disappointed or even harmed.
As a librarian and queer allyship facilitator, I dove into research, determined to find a centralized, reliable resource to help LGBTQ+ families find camps that genuinely support their kids. When I couldn’t find one, I created it. That’s how Queer Camp Fair came to life—a resource for families searching for camps where their queer children can truly thrive.
What makes Queer Camp Fair different?
Queer Camp Fair is more than a list—it’s a curated directory of camps that are committed to creating safe, affirming spaces for LGBTQ+ kids. Every camp listed has signed on to this pledge:
“Our camp is committed to providing a safe, affirming, and inclusive environment for all campers and staff, regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation, or expression. We encourage everyone to express their authentic selves without fear of retribution, discrimination, or harm.”
This isn’t just a generic statement—it’s a promise that Queer Camp Fair actively works to uphold.
Why affirmation matters more than acceptance
Many camps promote themselves as “welcoming” but fall short of public affirmation for LGBTQ+ inclusion. Whether out of fear of backlash or complacency, quiet acceptance often leaves kids vulnerable. In a world where LGBTQ+ youth face mounting challenges, affirmation—loud, visible, and proactive support—is essential.
Queer Camp Fair offers a starting point to find camps that prioritize affirmation, not just tolerance. I’ve witnessed the transformative power of these spaces:
For instance, a nonbinary camper blossomed at a camp found through Queer Camp Fair. Their mom told me, “For the first time, they came home excited, not anxious. It was life-changing.”
