On June 27, Akron, Ohio, police officers shot and killed 25-year-old Jayland Walker. Now protestors are demanding justice.

On June 27, just after midnight, eight Akron police officers shot and killed 25-year-old Jayland Walker as he fled on foot through an empty parking lot.

Officers fired upwards of 90 rounds — striking Walker more than 60 times before calling a ceasefire.

After killing him, Akron police chief Stephen Mylett confirmed that officers placed handcuffs on Walker’s body.

Since Walker’s death, thousands of demonstrators have taken to the streets in protest, including the Bayard Rustin LGBTQ+ Resource Center — Akron’s only Black LGBTQ+ organization.

Outside the Harold K. Stubbs Justice Center, and in neighborhoods across the city, protestors continue to gather, demanding justice and accountability.
