As hundreds of thousands of individuals converged on Columbus for the Midwest’s second biggest LGBTQ+ June event, Pride-goers gathered in Warren, Ohio on Saturday for an event that may have been smaller than Columbus in attendance, but just as big in Pride spirit.
Pride in the Valley brought together individuals from all over the Mahoning Valley in Northeast Ohio, including many who crossed the border from nearby Pennsylvania to join the festivities. The event was sponsored by Full Spectrum Community Outreach, a Youngstown-based nonprofit celebrating their 10th anniversary.
Organizers praised the huge turnout — which included a march around Warren’s Courthouse Square, local entertainment and over 100 vendors — and highlighted the connection between the event and LGBTQ+ visibility.
“It is important in these really tumultuous times to make sure that we are in community, remind people that we’re centered in love and make sure that every single person can be who they are authentically without worry of having to look over their shoulders,” said Nikki Crawford, operations manager for Full Spectrum. “I’m really happy we’re able to provide a space where people feel safe.”
Organizers also praised the diversity of attendees.
“My favorite part of the day was seeing all the families and people of all generations: from those coming out for the first time, to those who never got to be out, to those moving forward with commitment ceremonies, to those trying to find a summer camp for their LGBTQ+ child,” said Crawford.
